The issue is not trivial. The highest-end watch, a $100,000 Swiss-made tourbillon, alone represents a potential turnover of $147 million.
There is something to reassure the entire watch industry. If the election of Trump raises the threat of a hussar customs duty, the Swiss watch should escape the hammer blow. At least, the billionaire president would be well inspired by it. Since, as our research has established, his $100,000 “Swiss made” timepieces, all in gold and diamonds, were not intended to support his campaign, but to line his own pockets. A good part of the 147 promised watches are still in production, somewhere between La Chaux-de-Fonds and Ticino.
In parallel with the centerpiece, the owners of the Trump license are increasing the number of commemorative editions for pre-order. Not on the Swiss tourbillon, but on watches made in China between 500 and 1000 dollars, which constitute the majority of the collections. They are divided into three families with evocative names: “Victory”, “Crypto President” and “Fighter”. Since the victory at the polls, the models have followed one another in all variations. Gilding, stones, lucky medal extra, with or without an effigy of Mr. MAGA (Make America Great Again). All in a low-end tone flush with the campaign cap. Several thousand of these Chinese watches priced between $500 and $1000 have already been sold to date.
