Firefighters have been mobilized since the beginning of the afternoon. A fire broke out around 1:45 p.m. this Thursday, June 27 in the Mat’ild recycling center in Gardanne in Bouches-du-Rhône on approximately 2000m3 of waste.

Heavy black smoke is emanating from the site of the fire, on the side of the road, along the D6 in Gardanne. Since around 2 p.m. this Thursday, June 27, Bouches-du-Rhône firefighters have been trying to put out a fire which broke out at the Mat’ild recycling center, for a reason still unknown.

According to the firefighters, who shared information on X, the fire spread over approximately 2000 m³ of waste. Twenty-two engines were used to try to put out the fire.

Bouches-du-Rhône firefighters warn of the thick black plume of smoke which can cause inconvenience to motorists. For the moment, they cannot establish the possible level of toxicity of the fumes.

“There is a risk of propagation to an administrative building adjacent to the waste reprocessing company. The massive resources being committed aim to protect it“, specifies the firefighter communications unit.

On its website, Mat’Ild presents itself as a specialized site in the management of non-hazardous waste.

In 2021, a recycling center specializing in recycling burned down in Saint-Chamas. The fire lasted six weeks, due to illegal storage of waste.
