In Ukraine, while all the media were wondering about the future of their country after exactly “a thousand days” war this Tuesday, November 19, another type of concern seems to have gripped the Russian press. Namely the drastic increase in certain foods used in the composition of the famous “Olivier salad” – which is generally called “Russian salad” in the rest of the world – a dish traditionally served for the end of year celebrations and used as an indicator of inflation in the country.
Since 2009, we have even established a “index Olivier” which is updated approximately every year at the same period, specifies the famous opposition newspaper (now in exile) Novaya Gazeta Europe.
However, the cost of this salad (composed in its simplified variant of cooked sausage, mayonnaise, peas, boiled carrots, hard-boiled eggs and malossol pickles) has increased by 70% in barely a year, continues the title . Which means that the cost of “Olivier salad” has more than doubled in barely a year, worries the television channel RTVI.
