At the end of April, the Brax shelter rescued 28 puppies and 7 adult dogs from an illegal breeder in the Lot. What happened to these animals two months later?

“We don’t collect so many animals every day, we don’t forget a day like this,” begins Christine Salane, president of the shelter in Brax. On April 23, the shelter recovered 28 puppies and 7 adult dogs, abandoned in an old farmhouse, in Saint-Projet in the Lot. In a deplorable state, the animals lived outside, in the ground.

However, “they were in good shape. It’s quite surprising, but they are robust breeds”, adds the president. They come from breeds such as Beauceron, Berger de Crau or Kangal. From their second month, they were identified and primary vaccinated. The adoptive families reimbursed these fees, plus paid for future sterilization.

All the puppies have found homes

That’s the good news. All 28 puppies have found homes. Mobilization on social networks made it possible to attract people. “It’s a Kangal cross, an adult male can reach 60 kg. Space is needed, families are warned. We didn’t leave the puppies with just anyone,” assures Christine Salane. The new owners come from all the neighboring departments: Gironde, Gers and of course Lot.

The Kangal litter, a breed originally from Turkey, is used to guarding herds in the Turkish mountains. “They defend the herds against attacks by wolves. They have an extraordinary character, full of courage and they are very brave,” describes the president of the refuge. Moreover, the father of the litter was presented to the 6th grade of Chaumié college. “He remained calm throughout,” adds Christine Salane. Currently, “Bobby” still lives at the shelter, in the president’s office: “He makes his life, he can’t stand being locked up. We are trying to get him adopted, but he is very imposing. He has only one fault , he doesn’t like cats.” Accustomed to the great outdoors, animals need space to be happy.

A lot of work

To save these little ones, the team had to work hard. “For several days, we worked full time for them. You have to feed them, plus cleaning, it’s a lot of work,” recalls Christine Salane, at the shelter for 30 years.

The first days, the two employees supported by the volunteers washed the animals 5 to 7 times a day, as the dirt was so impregnated in the young coats of the animals. From this clandestine breeding, four dogs are still offered for adoption. The last three adults having found a home with foster families.
