(Business in Cameroon) – The town of Ebolowa, regional capital of southern Cameroon, will soon have a domestic gas filling and storage center, built by the Hydrocarbon Price Stabilization Fund (CSPH). At least this is what reveals a restricted call for tenders recently launched by this state company, towards seven companies pre-selected as part of this project, the cost of which is estimated at 6.4 billion FCFA.

But, while waiting for the start of work on the infrastructure in progress in Ebolowa, the CSPH should take delivery, before the end of the current year, of the domestic gas filling center in Bamenda, in the North-West region of Cameroon. The announcement was made on February 16, 2024, during a visit to the work site by the director general of the CSPH, Okié Johnson Ndoh.

Domestic gas filling and storage centers ensure that populations have access to this source of energy at affordable prices. Indeed, despite the approval of the price of the 12 kg domestic gas bottle at 6,500 FCFA, it is not uncommon to see this product being sold at 10,000 FCFA in certain parts of Cameroon, due to the the remoteness of the deposits inducing significant transport costs.

In addition to the democratization of access to domestic gas, the filling centers built in the country by the CSPH and other marketers are participating in the fight against desertification (in the north) and deforestation (in the southern part), consequences of the use of firewood in households. According to the Ministry of Forests and Wildlife, the volumes of coal put on sale on the Cameroonian market each year have a total value of 17 billion FCFA. This reflects the vigor of this activity, which constitutes a real threat to the environment, according to NGOs.
