Saccording to a Eurostat study, 46% of all trade in goods carried out in 2023 by the European Union with the rest of the world was denominated in euros, while 42% was in dollars and only 12% in other currencies. The euro comes first for extra-community exports, with a share of 52%, ahead of the dollar (32%) and other currencies (13%).

In 19 of the 27 European Union countries, the euro is the most used currency for exports of goods, with the highest shares observed in Slovenia (90%), Croatia (82%) and Latvia ( 78%). In six EU countries, the dollar is the majority currency, with a share above 50% in Cyprus (76%), Ireland (65%) and Greece (54%). A little more than half (52%) of French exports outside the European Union are denominated in euros and 32.7% are in dollars.

The dollar for import into the EU

Due in particular to oil imports mainly invoiced in dollars, the greenback is on the other hand the most used invoice currency for imports into the European Union, with a share of 50% in 2023, followed by the euro (41%) and by other currencies (9%). The dollar is the majority currency for imports in 16 of the 27 EU countries, with a share reaching 67% in Finland, 64% in Greece, Poland and Lithuania.
