Why the US finally allowed Ukraine to fire long-range missiles at Russia

It was the arrival in Russia of 10,000 North Korean soldiers, who came to help Moscow retake this Kursk region, which finally decided Washington to give the green light to Ukraine. After months of debates with his advisers, Joe Biden therefore authorizes kyiv to strike Russia on its own territory, with ATACMS missiles with a range of 300 kilometers, already supplied by the Americans.

Putting kyiv in the best possible position for negotiations

A major strategic break, on the part of the outgoing Democratic president. And this, even if the course of the war should not be disrupted, officials temper.

Objective initially: to allow kyiv to defend the Kursk region, conquered this summer, and to warn North Korea: its soldiers will be threatened if they operate on Russian soil.

Joe Biden, finally, is also perhaps trying to put kyiv in the best possible position in the event of possible forced negotiations with Vladimir Putin: in two months, it is indeed Donald Trump who will take his place in the Oval Office. And the billionaire intends to cut arms deliveries to Ukraine.

In Ukraine, we rejoice: “Finally!”

This was the first thing the Ukrainians said to themselves when they heard the news in the evening: the country had been waiting for this decision from the United States for months. As a very enthusiastic soldier spoke to our microphone, this decision on the part of the United States will “give hope” to those who fight on the front. The soldiers are tired, he says, we must accelerate the course of the war so that there can finally be changes.

This decision on the part of Washington came just hours after a massive Russian attack on Ukraine… More than 120 missiles and 90 drones launched Sunday morning across the country, against energy infrastructure.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, however, welcomes this announcement with caution. In his daily address to the nation, the Ukrainian president said “that strikes are not done using words”. And that it is the missiles, from now on, which will speak for themselves.
