Apple Intelligence: is the DMA really the cause of the delay in the European Union?

Apple Intelligence will not be available in European Union member countries this year “due to regulatory uncertainties caused by legislation on digital markets”. The most optimistic will note that it was not expected to be available outside of English-speaking countries before next year anyway. The most pessimistic will worry that iPhone mirroring and improvements to screen sharing with SharePlay will also be affected. Which raises a question: is the DMA really to blame?

“Due to regulatory uncertainties caused by legislation on digital markets”says Apple, “We don’t think we’ll be able to bring three features—iPhone mirroring, SharePlay screen sharing improvements, and Apple Intelligence—to our EU users this year. » The justification does not seem to resist Occam’s razor: the fifty-four articles of the legislation on digital markets, better known as the DMA, leave little room for doubt.

Apple Intelligence will not be available in Europe “this year” because of the DMA

THE timing of this declaration, at the end of the week to prevent any serious analysis before the weekend, and the chosen newspaper, the Financial Times which is read carefully in Brussels, neither. Apple, which did not suddenly discover the DMA requirements and has been working on the features in question for a long time, is perfectly sure of its move. The company has also entrusted John Gruber, who has adopted a hostile (even chauvinistic) posture towards the European Union, with the task of publishing the verbatim :

Two weeks ago, Apple unveiled hundreds of new features, which we can’t wait to bring to our users around the world. We are motivated by the idea of making these technologies accessible to all our users. However, due to regulatory uncertainties caused by the Digital Markets Act (DMA), we do not believe we can offer three of these features — iPhone mirroring, improvements to screen sharing with SharePlay and Apple Intelligence — to our users in the European Union this year.
