Romelu Lukaku’s withdrawal means that Domenico Tedesco must appoint a new captain for this Sunday against Israel. It won’t be Amadou Onana either, also injured.
The responsibility for taking the armband in the combined absence of De Bruyne, Lukaku and Onana will therefore fall to the player who has the most experience in this group which is now devoid of it: Timothy Castagne. He was present at a press conference in Budapest for the occasion.
Let us also add that Thomas Meunier and Youri Tielemans could also apply for this role but are also absent. “I will be captain, and it’s a real honor, it’s very special for me,” rejoiced Castagne.
A nice way also to forget comments which sounded a little critical on his part towards Domenico Tedesco after the defeat against Italy (read here).
Timothy Castagne had implied that the lack of pressing at the start of the match against Italy was a decision by the coach, with which the group did not seem to agree.
An outstretched hand? Not necessarily: Tedesco probably proceeded by elimination. The cascade of packages left few options for the armband – even if we can also be surprised that a strong personality like Wout Faes was not favored.
