A tragic accident occurred on Sunday June 23 on Lake Cazaux in La Teste-de-Buch (Gironde), reports France Bleu Gironde. A 12-year-old child died after falling into the water while being towed by a boat on a buoy. An investigation has been opened.

Drama on a family Sunday. A 12-year-old child died on Sunday June 23 after a towed buoy accident on Lake Cazaux, between Gironde and Landes, in the town of La Teste-de-Buch. According to France Bleu Gironde, the boy was being pulled by a boat with another child when he fell into the water around 5 p.m. The driver of the boat hit it head-on while going to retrieve it.

Died from his injuries

The victim’s body was only found after two hours of searching, after firefighters deployed a major effort to find the young boy, who had disappeared beneath the surface of the water. Swimmers, nautical teams and a helicopter were mobilized, managing to find the unconscious child. A doctor then pronounced him dead, attributed to his injuries.

An investigation was opened by the prosecution, adds France Bleu, which specifies that the driver of the boat was briefly interviewed by investigators. The investigations must in particular determine whether the safety rules specific to this type of activity were followed. Although these accidents remain rare, similar cases have already occurred. In August 2019, a teenager towed by a buoy in Loire-Atlantique died, struck by the boat’s propeller. His father was convicted a year later, reported West France in 2020, for letting her 12-year-old son drive the canoe, which was prohibited by the rental company.
