The first information delivered during the first days of COP29, which is taking place in Azerbaijan, is currently clear: the broadcastsbroadcasts greenhouse gases from coal, oiloil and gas will rise by another 0.8% in 2024. Even though we are supposed to reduce these same emissions by 43% by 2030, in other words, tomorrow! The rate of increase in emissions has nevertheless slowed down over the past 10 years, even if the fact is that they continue to increase a little each year.
And at this rate, it is obvious that there is no sign of a drastic decline within six years. The main global polluter, China, will continue to develop and its emissions (gas emissions in particular) will continue to increase.
The priority of COP29: helping poor countries
What purpose can this new COP serve in this context? The answer is simple: something else. The objective has not been abandoned, but COP29 will mainly focus on aid to poor countries, in two ways.
First of all, on the financing necessary for the inevitable adaptation to the extreme phenomena which result from climate changeclimate change – a kind of financial reparation paid by some of the rich countries. Then, in addition to helping them adapt, the COP will also help them develop, with more renewable energies thanfossil fuelsfossil fuels.
