On Sunday November 19, 1944, the first French army of General de Lattre entered Seppois, the first liberated Alsatian village. On March 19, 1945, Wissembourg was finally cleared of the German army by the American troops of General Patch. Between these two dates, Alsace lived daily between paradise and hell.
Essentially based on “The Liberation Agenda” conceived and written by journalist Edouard Boeglin for the newspaper L’Alsace in 1994, the interactive infographic that follows allows you to experience day after day, in a hundred dates, the liberation of Alsace, but also to navigate from a map from Altkirch to Wissembourg, from north to south of the region, to relive this dramatic period. Links to more in-depth articles, stories, testimonies, videos or slideshows allow you to deepen this dive into an essential moment in Alsatian history.
The Mission Libération label
The series on the liberation of Alsace, proposed by the DNA et L’Alsacehave the label Liberation Mission. Under this official label are brought together the projects carried out across France to perpetuate the memory of the Liberation. The series proposed in the columns of our two daily newspapers, on the sites and applications, were produced with the assistance of authoritative historians on the subject; they give an important place to testimonies. The use of digital formats such as videos, podcasts and interactive content to tell the story of the liberation of Alsace responds to the wishes of the Liberation Mission to reach young audiences.
