Microsoft continues to evolve Windows 11 with new features, available in preview to members of the Insider program.

New options for Windows Insiders

Windows testers, Insiders, have reason to rejoice with the two new builds recently deployed by Microsoft. These updates, while minor, bring some nice features and user experience improvements.

For Beta channel users, updating to build 22635.4445 introduces a new option in the folder context menu. This feature, still in the testing phase, simplifies file management and should appeal to regular users.

For their part, Insiders in the Development channel benefit from a very practical shortcut with build 26120.2222. By holding down the Shift and Ctrl keys while clicking an item in the Start menu shortcuts list, it is now possible to launch an application as administrator. A significant time saver for those who regularly perform tasks requiring elevated privileges.

Known issues and an important note for Narrator users

While these new features are to be welcomed, it should be noted that Insider builds are likely to contain bugs. This is the case of build 26120.2222 which presents a significant problem affecting Narrator, the Windows accessibility tool.

Microsoft has reported that using natural voices (like Jenny) with Narrator may result in blocking the application on launch. Users of this tool are therefore invited to pause updates or switch to another voice to avoid any inconvenience.

“There is an issue in this release that will cause Narrator to crash on launch if you use one of the natural voices (like Jenny),” Microsoft explained. “If you are a Narrator user, we recommend pausing updates from Settings under Windows Update > “Pause Updates.” If you install this update and experience this issue, switching to another voice, like Microsoft David, in Settings under Accessibility > Narrator will stop the crashes. As Narrator crashes, you will need to use a secondary screen reader or enlist the help of another person to do so.

These latest updates for Windows Insiders demonstrate Microsoft's commitment to continually improving its operating system. Although some problems remain, these new features bring a breath of fresh air and meet certain user expectations. However, you will have to wait for stable versions to take full advantage of these features.
