Succeeding Lithuania, Luxembourg took over the rotating Presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, during a meeting of representatives of the 46 member states of the organization.
Addressing the Committee of Ministers, Gabrielius Landsbergis, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania, took stock of his country’s Presidency.
The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade of Luxembourg, Xavier Bettel, then presented the priorities of his country’s Presidency for the next six months.
Luxembourg will ensure that the Council of Europe continues to use its expertise to support Ukraine and the millions of people affected by the conflict, focusing its efforts on rejecting impunity for crimes committed in Ukraine .
The Presidency program will also be structured around the following priorities:
- Rule of law and democracy – defense of common standards and policies as essential levers to fight against democratic backsliding and growing threats in Europe;
- Living together – fostering mutual respect and understanding in our plural societies;
- Culture, sport and heritage – vectors for promoting human rights.
