The Director-General of the Nigerian Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), Mr. Gbenga Komolafe, has announced plans to capture up to 250 million cubic feet of gas flared per day to reduce emissions in the upstream oil sector .
Speaking at the 42nd International Annual Conference and Exhibition of the Nigerian Association of Petroleum Explorers (NAPE) in Lagos, Mr. Gbenga Komolafe said Nigeria continues to burn
gas and that between 2012 and 2022, the it had burned about 80 billion cubic meters of standard gas, worth about N9 trillion, as part of its oil production process.
According to Komolafe, the NUPRC has prioritized decarbonization efforts through the Nigerian Flared Gas Commercialization Program, “ aiming to capture 250 million cubic feet of gas flared per day and significantly reduce emissions ».
Komolafe called for a collective approach to address Nigeria’s triple energy challenge: security, affordability and sustainability.
While commending NAPE members for their contributions to Nigeria’s oil and gas sector, he noted that technological advancements have strengthened the industry and the economy.
Highlighting the energy challenges, he reiterated the Nigerian government’s commitment to creating an investor-friendly environment that enables energy independence.
