In a statement from the Rawlings Foundation and the JJ Rawlings family, the late President was celebrated as an steadfast husband, father, grandfather and friend to millions across Ghana and the world.
Flight Lieutenant Jerry John Rawlings, nicknamed “The People’s Man,” is remembered for his unwavering commitment to justice, freedom and accountability as an exemplary figure of African leadership.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced that it will hold a wreath-laying ceremony on Tuesday, November 12, 2024, at the party headquarters in Adabraka, to mark the 4th death anniversary celebrations of the late founder and former President of the Party.
The NDC further indicated that due to its ongoing nationwide “Reset Ghana” campaign, the party has ordered all campaign teams across the country to observe the day with “2 minutes of silence” at 10 a.m. sharp in memory and honor of their late leader and founder.
Mr. Rawlings entered the Ghanaian political arena in 1979, at a time of socio-economic turmoil when his decisive leadership sparked a movement for change.
As a young air force pilot and leader of the Armed Forces Revolutionary Council (AFRC), he inspired a new political consciousness among Ghanaians.
His tenure continued as President of the Provisional National Defense Council (PNDC) from 1981 to 1992, and then as the first President of the Fourth Republic from 1992 to 2001, making him Ghana’s longest-serving leader .
He also founded the National Democratic Congress (NDC), which has since played a central role in Ghanaian politics.
The statement highlights Rawlings’ contribution to Ghana’s socio-economic recovery and growth.
His courage in the face of injustice and his resistance to the exploitation of Africa’s resources are among the values that endeared him to the people.
