Ramming car attack in southern China leaves 35 dead, dozens injured

The driver was arrested while he was stabbing himself with a knife, according to the police, who did not communicate until the day after the incident.

The police denounce a “serious and vicious attack”. A car drove into a crowd, killing 35 people and injuring 43, on Monday, November 11, in Zhuhai, a town in southern China, local police announced on Tuesday.

Authorities had reported such an incident as early as Monday evening, but police then only reported injuries, and videos were subsequently removed from social media.

The driver, a 62-year-old man, “forced entry at the wheel of a small SUV and drove into the city’s sports center, knocking down people who were training in the interior aisles”said the police.

He was arrested while stabbing himself with a knife “and was sent to the hospital for treatment”still according to the police. In particular injured in the neck, he is in a coma and “is not fit to undergo interrogation”.

Chinese President Xi Jinping called for “everything necessary” to treat the injured, and hoped that the perpetrator would be “punished according to law”. The largest Chinese civil and military air show is currently taking place in Zuhai.
