“We ask that the match which takes place on Thursday between France and Israel be canceled”. During a press conference organized this Tuesday, November 12 at the National Assembly, Mathilde Panot, the president of the France Insoumise group at the Palais Bourbon, indicated that her group wanted the cancellation of this League of Nations meeting, scheduled for Thursday at the Stade de France, due to the very tense international context.
To justify her position, the member for Val-de-Marne mentioned “very strong troubles”and therefore judged « important […] that (this) event cannot be held”. At the beginning of November, LFI deputy Louis Boyard had already called for the cancellation of this meeting, to protest against “Israeli government policy” and the war in Gaza.
In recent days, the clashes that occurred in Amsterdam on the sidelines of a Maccabi Tel-Aviv European Cup match have reignited tensions during this match.
A “question of principle” for Bruno Retailleau
The Minister of the Interior Bruno Retailleau assured him that this match would be held “a question of principle”. Gil Avérous, the Minister of Sports Gil told him that he was not “more worried than that” before the meeting. “We know that it’s a risky match, we take note of that and we take the necessary steps to ensure that it goes well.”
Some 4,000 police officers and gendarmes, as well as 1,600 security agents, will be mobilized for this meeting, where Emmanuel Macron is notably expected. The Minister of the Interior also indicated that he did not intend to relocate the match.
