For the 2024 Olympic Games, France Télévision will broadcast the competition in 4K through a dedicated TV channel with an image four times more detailed than Full HD. TF1 also adopted this resolution during Euro 2024 which began this Friday June 14, not without some problems which have since been corrected.

There are several elements to take into account to know if you have access to 4K. First of all, your location in France. Simply go to the TNT website and enter your location. Next, a drop-down list of channels tells you whether the reception is good or not. 4K compatibility also goes through your hardware between a box, the boxes or the broadcaster like Molotov or Canal+.

Which DTT channels broadcast content in 4K?

But does TNT broadcast real 4K? When available, TF1, France 2, France 3 and Canal+ offer an Ultra HD stream which is a 4K stream with a resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels, with a refresh rate of 50 frames per second. But the presence or not of artifacts depends on the speed available to the viewer, which must be at least 18 Mb/s to receive the 4K stream in good conditions.

The television (or box) must also be compatible with the HEVC codec (High Efficiency Video Coding) for 4K transmission, without significant loss of quality and DVB-T2 compatible (Digital Video Broadcasting – Terrestrial, 2nd generation). This is important for following sporting events as best as possible, without artifacts.

In the case of M6 during Euro 2024, it is not 4K but HDR with 50 frames per second and a resolution of 1080p, two different things. If you have a 4K TV, a upscale of the channel provides access to Ultra HD with M6 HDR. So a resolution improvement for 4K screens, not true 4K.

There is an M6 4K channel but the matches will not be captured in 4K and it is not accessible via DTT, it is better to opt for M6 HDR.
