The explosion of online sports betting

During the European Football Championship, which began on Friday June 14, and the Paris Olympic Games (July 26 to August 11), the National Games Authority (ANJ) expects more than a billion euros of bets in sports betting in France, as reported by TV5 Monde. A colossal figure which should bring the turnover of online sports betting sites to a new record this year.

As our infographic based on ANJ data shows, the turnover (gross gaming product) of online sports betting has literally exploded in France over the last ten years, going from 228 million euros in 2014, to 1.48 billion in 2023, representing growth of more than 500% over the period. This trend can be explained by the fact that sports betting attracts more and more players, but also by the fact that they tend to spend more and more. While the average annual spending of French players did not exceed 200 euros in 2014, they jumped from 243 euros to 345 euros per year between 2020 and 2023. Still according to ANJ figures, young people are the main targets betting operators, since around 30% of sports bettors (mainly male) are between 18 and 24 years old and 34% between 25 and 34 years old.
