A jewel of industrial architecture, the Levavasseur spinning mill, located Radepontnear Romilly-sur-Eure (Eure) has just received a national prize, during the Heritage Fairwhich was held last week at Louvre Carousel has Paris.
The Graphic Art and Heritage prize, awarded in partnership with the Safeguarding of French Art, rewarded the project to promote the spinning mill by the Department of Eure, owner since 1999.
Departmental advisor, head of the commission in charge of Culture and Heritage, Catherine Delalande received the prize, Friday October 25, 2024awarded by the jury attracted by this “exceptional Norman industrial heritage” and “the quality of the promotion by the Department of Eure”.
1.5 million euros invested by 2028
This distinction is accompanied by a skills sponsorship worth 15,000 euros granted by the company Art Graphique & Patrimoine.
This financial boost will allow the Department of Eure to continue its project started in 2018 to highlight the unique architecture of the building and to promote spinning to the general public.
A 3D scan will be carried out to document the state of the building before the consolidation work planned for 2025.
In April 2024, during the presentation of the action plan to revive the Levavasseur spinning mill, the president of the Department Alexandre Rassaërt announced a budget of 1.5 million euros, by 2028, to ensure the preservation of the site.
He also announced the launch of a first phase of work at the end of the year, in order to consolidate the site to make it accessible to the public.
This part of the project, already planned for 2021, but which had to be postponed, has a budget of 500,000 euros. It also includes the devegetation of ruins. To complete this large-scale project, the Department can count on financial assistance from the Heritage Foundation through the Bern Mission to the tune of 250,000 euros. The insurer Axa is contributing €100,000 as part of the corporate sponsorship system developed by the Foundation.
A thousand visitors
This year, more than a thousand visitors were able to come and discover the site, despite restricted access for security reasons.
Classical and dramatized guided tours, concerts, and even the “Au fil des sons” project involving welfare children have brought this 19th century industrial heritage to life all year round.
With this award, the Department will therefore continue the development of this former spinning mill, currently being classified as a Historic Monument, and whose complete reopening is planned for 2028.
