Faced with the persistence of high prices for petroleum products and basic necessities, the Consumers’ League of Togo (LCT) launched an appeal on Monday asking the government to review prices downwards. Emmanuel Sogadji, president of the LCT, urged the head of state to “make an effort to return to old prices” in order to ease the burden on Togolese consumers.
For more than a year, the prices of fuels, particularly unleaded super, have remained unchanged after a significant increase in 2022. At the time, the price of a liter of super had increased from 625 to 700 CFA francs, a justified increase. by the surge in world prices for a barrel of oil.
However, the LCT affirms that the current situation on the international market no longer justifies this maintenance of prices.
“The price of a barrel has improved for months, but the Committee for Monitoring Fluctuations in the Prices of Petroleum Products (CSFPPP) has still done nothing,” denounces Mr. Sogadji.
Emmanuel Sogadji also highlighted the disparities between Togo and neighboring countries.
The LCT emphasizes the need for rapid government intervention to relieve households. In addition to fuel and gas, it calls for a review of the prices of other essential products such as cement, the increase of which also affects the construction and housing sectors.
