An explosion took place at the Tafisa factory in Lac-Mégantic last Friday June 14 around 5:30 p.m.

The incident mainly affected one of the two raw particle board production lines but caused no injuries. The city’s firefighters intervened quickly, supported by the internal brigade. Tafisa contacted the CNESST and the Ministry of the Environment, the Fight against Climate Change, Wildlife and Parks (MELCCFP), to inform them of the situation.

An action plan has been put in place which includes numerous measures aimed at securing the site, supporting employees, including psychological support, analyzing the causes, assessing the damage, and establishing a sequence to restart operations.

Some major damage results in the shutdown of some operations, including the affected line, for several more weeks. Since Sunday, sectors of the factory have been put back into operation, including the shipping of panels and the operation of melamine lines.

As for the resumption of operations of the raw particle board production lines, Tafisa plans to restart one of the two lines in the coming days. All staff are required to work and no layoffs are anticipated.

The situation has been communicated to customers, key suppliers and business partners.
