It was an unusual evening which took place in the Saint-Sauveur district of Flers (Orne). Indeed, on the night of Saturday 9 to Sunday 10 November 2024, a scooter caught fire under the porch of a building from 21 rue Joseph-Morin.
The flames then quickly spread within the ground floor apartment which adjoins the porch. Laura Jeanne, tenant of the apartment, then evacuated the premises with her brother and her two children aged three and six. She recounts the scene of the fire.
The one who was in bed with her children hears an explosion before being taken aback by the flames which begin to invade her bathroom, adjacent to her bedroomat around 1:30 a.m.
I woke up my brother, he saw that the tiles were starting to crack and the flames were passing through the VMC which started to melt.
A night of horror
This mixture of plastic and gasoline quickly turns into thick smoke spreading throughout the apartment.
Without a second thought, he closes the bathroom door which catches fire and takes the children out of the apartment.
We evacuated my children and my dog. My children were barefoot and in their pajamas outside. The neighbors put blankets on them and kept them warm. I thank them very much.
Her last reflex as a mother, to return to the apartment to take her children’s photo albums, before the apartment becomes completely inaccessible.
Entire building evacuated
After notifying the emergency services around 1:30 a.m. this Sunday, there are no less than 15 firefighters from Flers and Tinchebray who intervened to put out the fire. The police forces as well as Enedis and GRDF also came to the scene.
On the municipal side, an on-call officer made the trip and offered an emergency rehousing solution to the family.
The fire was contained but “the entire building was evacuated” for safety reasons until the end of the intervention at around 3:47 a.m. Since then, Laura has been in shock.
It’s a bit hard, I’m staying with my mother and on Sunday morning, my children went to Rennes to stay with their father and grandmother.
A scenario favored by the victim
According to the victim, it is common for young people have fun stealing scooters to dismantle them before setting them on fire.
The scooter belongs to a person in the building next door. I heard young people running and I heard a big boom. I thought it was a neighbor’s piece of furniture then I heard “Come on, come on! Quickly, quickly, quickly! “. My bedroom is next to the bathroom, I can hear everything.
If she doesn’t know the official version, she thinks that they threw the scooter to the ground, then set the tank on fire, before fleeing.
The victim in shock
Since the event, Laura Jeanne has been in a state of shock and manages, not without a certain emotion, to talk about this episode again.
I can’t sleep anymore, I sleep 4 hours a night, every time I close my eyes, I see the scene again.
If his son seemed well after the firefighters left, he hasn’t stopped vomiting for 24 hoursprobably due to stress.
“He’s got a fever of 38.7, he’s just throwing up. He suffered all the stress,” she explains. Aged three, the youngest in the family would have had his first class photo this Tuesday, he won’t go.
A complaint filed this Tuesday
Tuesday morning, the young woman went to the police to file a complaint.
The police station requested that my children see a forensic doctor.
A prize pool launched
“Mattresses, clothing, furniture, linen, comforters, everything smells like it’s burnt. The children’s clothes were able to be collected and saved because they were in the dresser,” she explains.
While waiting to be able to collect the insurance policy in order to buy back clothes, mattresses, furniture, or any other object that has been damaged, the young woman launched an online fundraiser to collect donations.
A welcome outpouring of generosity for this family which is no longer in control of its destiny.
