Taiwan said Monday it had closed an investigation into the pagers that exploded in Lebanon in September, clarifying that no Taiwanese citizens or companies were involved.
Security sources previously said the pagers were named after the Taiwan-based company Gold Apollo, which said it did not manufacture them. The Taiwanese government also said the pagers were not made in Taiwan, according to Reuters.
Taipei prosecutors, who are investigating the case, said in a statement that the model AR-924 beeper that exploded in Lebanon was manufactured, marketed and shipped by a company called Frontier Group Entity, and that it had been made outside of Taiwan. They added, however, that Gold Apollo had authorized the company to use the Apollo brand.
“There is no evidence that domestic manufacturers or individuals were complicit in the explosions in question, violated the Counterterrorism Financing Act, or engaged in other illegal activities,” prosecutors said in a statement.
“No concrete evidence of criminal activity was discovered in this case, nor was any specific person involved in any criminal activity, following a thorough investigation.
