Bad news for those considering purchasing a Tesla Model 3 This year in Belgium : its price should increase from July 1. The American giant attributes this increase to a potential increase in taxes on imports of electric cars from China.
The increase in the price of the Tesla Model 3 is expected in less than two weeks. A notification on the manufacturer’s website warned that “the price of Model 3 is expected to increase starting July 1, 2024 due to a possible increase in import taxes.” The direct relationship between the import of electric cars from China and the Tesla Model 3 is established, since this popular sedan is produced in Shanghai.
Tesla Model 3 now sold at a high price
The surcharge on electric cars from China comes after the European Commission denounced unfair competition facilitated by the large subsidies granted to Chinese car manufacturers. Negotiations are underway between the European Union and the Chinese authorities. If negotiations fail, additional taxes could be imposed from July 1, reaching up to 38% depending on the model.
These additional taxes are scheduled to take effect on July 4, affecting not only imports of Chinese vehicles, but also a portion of imports of American and European vehicles assembled in China. Although the Tesla Model 3 is produced in the United States, its European version is assembled in Shanghai. The Commission allowed a few weeks for a response and warned that, in the absence of a response from China, “provisional countervailing duties would be introduced from July 4”.
The manufacturer encourages future buyers of the Tesla Model 3 to take delivery of the vehicle before the deadline to take advantage of the current price before the increase. Some see this as a boost from the brand, but Tesla had already planned a nice surprise to encourage future buyers to take possession of the Tesla Model 3 before June 29: a free 20,000 km supercharge.
Remember that the price of the Tesla Model 3 Propulsion had fallen by €3,000 in April. To get an idea of the new price, it should be noted that additional customs duties will represent between 15 and 18% of the sale price. However, this figure will be confirmed in November. Vehicles imported from China should all undergo an increase of at least €5,000or even more, in order to maintain a certain level of profitability.
