The replacement of Ruben Amorim, who is heading to Manchester United, by João Pereira marks the eighth change of coach in the 2024/25 edition of Liga Portugal after 11 days of the championship.
The Portuguese coach, who was in his fifth season in charge of the “lions”, led the team to victory in the national championship in 2020/21 and 2023/24. He leaves the club at the top of the table, making a perfect start that equals the “leonine” team’s best start since the 1990/91 season.
Amorim won their opening 11 matches and bid farewell to Alvalade with Sporting six points ahead of second-placed FC Porto and eight points clear of third-placed Benfica, who have a game in hand.
Amorim’s departure from Sporting followed that of Luís Freire to Rio Ave after matchday 10, where he was positioned 14th. He was replaced by Petit, who won his first match (2-0 at Bessa).

The previous day, Uruguayan Gonzalo García was dismissed after leaving Arouca in 14th place, with Vasco Seabra taking over from him.
Earlier in the season, after just six matches without taking a point, José Mota left Farense and was replaced by Tozé Marreco.
Tozé Marreco was involved in the first coaching change of the season when he left Gil Vicente before the championship kicked off, with Carlos Cunha taking over on an interim basis, and Bruno Pinheiro joining the club after the second daytime.
Other changes included the dismissal of Daniel Sousa at Sporting de Braga after matchday one, with Carlos Carvalhal taking over, the dismissal of German coach Roger Schmidt at Benfica after matchday four, replaced by Bruno Lage, and the departure of Filipe Martins from Estrela da Amadora after the sixth day, where he was succeeded by a coaching commission led by José Faria, the team’s sporting director.
