After historically high increases recorded over the past two weeks, tomato prices are starting to come back to their senses.
This Sunday, prices fell considerably on the wholesale fruit and vegetable markets in the south of the country, particularly in the El Oued region, known to be a large producer of this agricultural product at this time of year. They are, according to the specialized Facebook page “All about agriculture”, between 50 and 60 DA per kg. Last week, prices exceeded 140 DA per kg on the same markets.
This drop, long awaited by consumers, can be explained, according to the same source, by the abundance of supply. The harvests from farms in the South are maturing one after the other, which is causing the supply on the market to explode. The decline in prices will continue over the coming days, for the same reasons.
Tomato prices will drop significantly from Monday in the fruit and vegetable retail markets located in the north of the country.
On the retail markets, tomato prices, let us remember, last week exceeded the threshold of 250 Da per kg. A level never reached in the history of independent Algeria.
