Luka Modric has equaled Cristiano Ronaldo’s record by appearing in the most editions of the Euros after playing against Spain.

The Real Madrid star was lined up in Croatia’s starting XI against Spain in their Euro 2024 debut on Saturday. Modric wore the captain’s armband and played 65 minutes in his team’s 3-0 defeat.

Despite the demoralizing result, Modric became the second player, after his former Los Blancos teammate Cristiano Ronaldo, to take part in five different editions of the European Championship. Ronaldo achieved this feat during Euro 2020. The record will, however, be rewritten very soon, as the Al-Nassr star is set to take part in his sixth European campaign, as Portugal take on the Czech Republic on Tuesday in their first match.

5 Euros for Modric

Modric made his Euro debut in 2008, when Croatia reached the quarter-finals. In 2012, they were eliminated in the group stage and reached the round of 16 in the last two editions.

The 2018 world runners-up will be in action again on Wednesday, as they take on Albania in a must-win Euro 2024 match.
