FALSE: These photos do not show the arrival of Chinese ships and planes in Taiwan | by PesaCheck | Jun, 2024

These images highlight Chinese fighter jets in 2015 but also the parade of Russian warships in 2021.

This Facebook post claiming to show photos of Chinese planes and ships arriving in Taiwan in 2024 is FALSE.

The post, which is dated June 4, 2024, reads: “This morning, 23 Chinese PLA aircraft and 08 PLA ships entered Taiwan for joint patrols.” It is accompanied by two images; the first showing fighter planes in the air, and the second displaying warships.

PesaCheck reviewed the post and found it to be false.

A reverse search with Google Lens of the photo showing military planes led to articles dating from 2015. The captions indicate in particular that these are “Photos of combat planes with decoy guided weapons dropping jamming bombs…”. Going through the said articles, PesaCheck read in particular: “Jammer bombs are infrared radiation bombs with higher temperatures used to direct enemy infrared-guided weapons away from the actual target…They are launched by J-11 fighter jets “.

As for the second photo, a reverse image search returns to this article posted online on January 30, 2022 by Deutsche Welle, with this headline: “Russia moves its naval exercises off the coast of Ireland”. It is illustrated with the photo of the warships, which bears this caption: “In this 2021 photo, Russian warships take part in a huge naval parade in the Gulf of Finland.”

A Google search with the keywords “Russian warships Gulf of Finland” found the same photo in this other article: “Russia celebrates Navy Day with impressive naval parade in St. Petersburg.” The image is attributed to Alexander Demianchuk.

A search with the keywords on Google “23 Chinese PLA planes and 08 PLA ships entered Taiwan for joint patrols” takes us to this article from the French newspaper Le Figaro dated June 4, 2024 with the title: “Taiwan: Taipei locates 23 Chinese military planes around the island”. In the article, the newspaper explains that: “Taiwan’s Defense Ministry said Tuesday it had detected 23 Chinese planes around the island in less than three hours, after multiple intrusions since the inauguration in Taipei of the new president Lai Ching-te.”
