Alverth Elis gives a moving interview to The Athletic from his coma
Alberth Elis has not set foot on Ligue 2 pitches since February 24, 2024, during the match between the Girondins de Bordeaux and Guingamp. That day, the Honduran international suffered a terrible blow to the head, forcing him to leave the field on a stretcher. Plunged into a coma for four days, he was transferred from Bordeaux University Hospital to a private clinic. Afterwards, he returned to his native country, Honduras, to continue his convalescence.
In a poignant interview given to The AthleticElis shared details of this extremely difficult time. “I didn’t know what happened,” he confides. “I didn’t even know something had happened to my head. When I woke up from the coma, I didn’t remember that I was a footballer. I didn’t remember that I was in France, or even that I was Honduran. The doctors thought my recovery would be difficult. »
Despite the initial gloomy prognoses, Alberth Elis showed remarkable strength in his fight for recovery. Today, he is even considering a return to competition. “Ideally I want to come back in January. I have had tests with the doctors, who assure me that I am fine and that I can play again. » This determination demonstrates a resilient state of mind and an unwavering desire to return to high level.
While waiting to make his comeback, Elis is training with Panters FC, a club he founded himself in Honduras. The road to professional reintegration remains strewn with pitfalls, but Elis is ready to do anything to reconnect with his passion.
