While the 2024 European Championship began on Friday with a bang with a slew of goals and Germany’s resounding victory against Scotland (5-1) in front of a delighted audience in Munich, the continent recorded on Saturday morning a sad news. Montenegro and the Millwall club are in mourning. Goalkeeper Matija Sarkic has unfortunately died. He was only 26 years old.

The sad announcement was made by the English club mid-morning. Matija Sarkic died suddenly on Saturday morning according to the Montenegrin Federation. According to local media cited by the BBC, the young doorman collapsed in his apartment in Budva, a city in Montenegro located on the Adriatic Sea. The Montenegro FA described Sarkic as a “beloved member” and an “eternally smiling man”. “His premature death caused great pain to the Sarkic family,” the statement added.

For their part, Millwall said they were “completely devastated”. “Everyone at the club sends their love and condolences to Matija’s family and friends at this extremely sad time,” indicates the English club which hired Matija Sarkic at the beginning of August 2023. During the last season, the tall 1.94m Montenegrin goalkeeper had played 33 matches and finished 13th in the Championship, the British second division. The international with 9 selections had just completed the international gathering with his selection. On June 5, he played the entire match against Belgium won by the Red Devils (2-0). The last Montenegrin rampart distinguished itself by signing several decisive parades.

Born in Grimsby, east of England, Sarkic played in the youth team for Anderlecht before joining Aston Villa in 2015. He had loan spells from the Villans to Wigan, Stratford Town, Havant & Waterlooville and Livingston before being transferred to Wolverhampton in 2020. Then the goalkeeper was loaned to Shrewsbury Town, Birmingham City and Stoke City before joining Millwall. Aston Villa, who had him under contract for 5 years, said they were “deeply supported”. “The thoughts and condolences of everyone at the club are with his family and friends at this incredibly sad time,” the Birmingham club said.
