The World Health Organization (WHO) and communities around the world are celebrating World Blood Day on June 14, 2024. Beyond a commemoration which is an opportunity to thank donors, this day also highlights the life-saving gesture which is the donation of blood which saves and improves millions of lives every year around the world.

Blood donation, a simple gesture which involves several actors, which takes little time and which can save lives. Indeed, donating blood is essential for patients who need it in many emergency situations, such as serious accidents, surgical interventions, illnesses, blood disorders. It is therefore on the occasion of World Blood Donor Day celebrated every June 14 that the world wanted to magnify each person who participates in this gesture of solidarity.

Blood donation, a simple and precious gesture

Did you know that each blood donation can save up to three lives? Hence the blood collections which are very often organized like the National Blood Transfusion Center (CNTS) in Gabon which very often initiates campaigns during which those in charge of the structure raise awareness among populations of the need to carry out this humanitarian gesture. Although to date many compatriots have not yet fully joined this initiative since ruptured blood bags are very often criticized.

Thus, to carry out this gesture, the volunteer donor undergoes an interview prior to the donation to verify the absence of contraindications and if a minimum time between 2 donations has been respected, the latter must weigh more than 50 kg. After the interview, blood is collected using a sterile, single-use aid. But a person who has undergone a blood transfusion, an organ, tissue or cell transplant cannot donate blood. A current or former intravenous drug user and homosexual males.
