Explosions in the underground parking lot of a building and a fire left two people dead and several injured on Thursday evening in the center of Nussbaumen (AG). Several buildings were evacuated. The material damage is considerable.

Several explosions were reported shortly before 7 p.m. in the underground parking lot of a building, said the Aargau cantonal police. A large police, fire and rescue team was deployed. When they arrived, the fire had already spread to the first floor.

The two people killed were found in the underground parking lot, police said at the scene. The eleven injured suffered only minor injuries, she added. The extinguishing work was completed before midnight and rescue operations continued. The causes of the disaster are currently unknown.

More than 100 residents evacuated

More than 100 residents of six towers connected to the underground car park were evacuated. Most were able to return to their homes in the evening. Among the others, many found refuge with relatives or friends, the police informed. For some, the municipality has organized emergency accommodation.

In addition to the ambulances, three rescue helicopters were involved in the fight against the fire. As the drones prevented them from flying, the police requested that these devices be brought back to the ground urgently. The helicopters were ultimately not needed to rescue people, but they helped the firefighters with aerial shots.
