“Phenomena that we didn’t have before”

During the information meeting concerning the arrival of diagnosticians in his municipality to help local residents protect themselves from flooding, Mayor Dominique Laurent expressed his surprise at the increase in this phenomenon. “Before, we had precipitation for several days when the Ornel and the Fond des Vaux rose and it overflowed. But as soon as the rain stopped, an hour later, we could see that it was starting to come down. And there, we have completely different manifestations,” he recalls.

Towards higher floods?

Before mentioning the precipitation last June causing a surprise flood. “We went to scrape classrooms at the school because they were flooded. 11:30 a.m., midnight, we toured a bit, it went up a bit, then it calmed down. But at 1:30 a.m., they called me and told me that there were houses flooded, 20 cm of water. There was a wave and then things got back to normal quite quickly. These are phenomena that we didn’t have before. »

For Dominique Laurent, in view of global warming, even if the floods would not be similar to those in Spain, “in the years to come, we will have floods which will perhaps be worse than those we have experienced” .
