Five Moroccan pilgrims have died in Mecca since the start of the 2024/1445 Hajj season, Abdelillah Daddas, Consul General of Morocco in Jeddah, announced this Wednesday, June 12, 2024.

Arriving to perform the duty of Hajj, five Moroccan pilgrims have died since the start of the current season. The information was made public by Abdelillah Daddas, Consul General of Morocco in Jeddah, who specified that three died in their hotel rooms.

Stressing that the cause of death appears to be natural, given that “These people all suffered from chronic illnesses such as diabetes and hypertension.”

Regarding the repatriation of remains, the consul explained that Moroccan pilgrims who die during the Hajj can be repatriated or buried on site.

In general, “99% of families give us the green light to bury their deceased loved ones in Saudi Arabia,” he adds, highlighting the sacred character of the place.

Furthermore, Abdelillah Daddas announced that “The Consulate General of Morocco has opened an office in Mecca which operates 24/7 to assist Moroccan pilgrims.”

This initiative launched “for the first time this year”, is intended to speed up administrative procedures in unfortunate events such as the death of a pilgrim. Similarly, the Consulate General plans to open a similar office in Medina for the upcoming Hajj season.

This year, 34,000 Moroccan pilgrims are participating in the Hajj. The Ministry of Habous and Islamic Affairs oversees 22,500 pilgrims, while tourism agencies manage the remaining 11,500.

To ensure the smooth running of this season, 738 administrators, scholars, doctors and media professionals, including 520 attendants and supervisors, are working hard to serve and supervise these pilgrims, concludes the Consul General of Morocco in Jeddah during an exchange with the media.
