“One death and more than 270 new cases of cholera have been recorded over the last two weeks,” the department said in the latest report on the evolution of the disease in this southern African country.

He added that the main hotspots of the epidemic in the country are the provinces of Nampula, with 5,610 cases and 15 deaths, Tete with 2,873 cases and 10 deaths, as well as Cabo Delgado with 2,431 cases and one death.

The head of the Expanded Program on Immunization within the Ministry of Health, Leonildo Nhampossa, said that more than two million people over the age of one were vaccinated against cholera in four provinces last January.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Mozambique is one of the countries most affected by cholera, with infections having increased significantly since the passage of Tropical Cyclone Freddy in 2023.

She also noted that the world would experience a shortage of cholera vaccines by 2025 and that a billion people in 43 countries could be infected by the disease.

An acute diarrheal infection caused by the absorption of food or water contaminated by the bacteria Vibrio cholerae, cholera is on the rise on the continent, particularly in southern Africa, she continued.
