Thursday, November 7, Vladimir Putin spoke during a plenary session of the prestigious Russian discussion club Valdaï which, for two decades, has brought together academics, experts and political leaders to reflect on the world of tomorrow and their place in it. occupies Russia. His long speech focused on “universal security and equal opportunities for development in the 21st century”. But everyone’s eyes were glued to him not so much to hear him talk once again about the “multipolar” world of tomorrow. Above all, it was Vladimir Putin’s first speech since the election of Donald Trump and those around him had suggested that the head of the Kremlin was finally going to say what he really thought. And how the new tenant of the White House could change the course of the war.

But we had to wait a long time to find out. For a very long time, as if this subject did not have this importance in the eyes of the Russian president. The latter first made his audience wait almost five hours before speaking and then discussing at length with the audience on “technological sovereignty”, artificial intelligence and even the climate. It was only after two hours that the moderator asked him what he thought of Donald Trump. Vladimir Putin immediately said he was impressed by his “courage” (during the attempted attack during the electoral campaign). “It is in exceptional circumstances that a man reveals his essence, and the Republican candidate has revealed himself to be a very courageous man,” he said. His ambition to end the war in Ukraine? “It deserves, at a minimum, our attention,” he continued, adding that Russia was ready to work with him. “And I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate him on his election to the office of President of the United States,” he concluded.
