The presentation of the 2023-2024 Prime Minister’s Excellence Awards was held yesterday in the foyer of the Legislative Assembly.

Presented annually, the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) Premier’s Awards of Excellence recognize the exceptional achievements of GNWT employees and partners who seek to achieve excellence and foster innovation within of the public service. This year’s awards highlighted the contributions of those who have worked hard to serve the people of the Northwest Territories.

The 2023-2024 Prime Minister’s Awards for Excellence were awarded in four categories: Individual, Team, Partnership Projects and Indigenous Partnership Projects.

The recipients of the Dave Ramsden Career Achievement and Kristine McLeod Emerging Indigenous Leaders Awards were also announced.

  • The Prime Minister’s Award of Excellence (Individual) was awarded to Fraser Lennie, ASTNO’s Director of Quality, Risk and Customer Experience. Mr. Lennie’s leadership in the Cultural Safety Design Collaborative initiative provided culturally competent care to Indigenous clients and had a lasting impact on the health care system.
  • The Prime Minister’s Award of Excellence (Team) was awarded to the MAMC senior leadership team that led emergency responses to the unprecedented 2023 wildfires. The team coordinated efforts across all regions of the NWT and ensured safety of residents while nearly 70% of the population was evacuated.
  • The Prime Minister’s Partnership Award was awarded to two teams:
    • The ASTNO and ASSSSHR Evidence-Based Practices for Quality Improvement team provided quality improvement training to over 115 health care staff in the NWT , thus promoting a culture of continuous improvement.
    • The Diagnostic Imaging System Replacement Project team, which successfully replaced outdated diagnostic imaging technologies, improving healthcare communication and ensuring the delivery of better quality care, closer to the customers’ homes.
  • The Prime Minister’s Indigenous Partnership Award was awarded to the Mentor-Apprentice Program (MAP) team for their dedication to the revitalization of Indigenous languages; the team formed mentor-apprentice pairs in seven traditional language groups.
  • The Dave Ramsden Award for Career Excellence was awarded to Benoît Boutin, former Director General of the Francophone Affairs Secretariat, for his exceptional contribution to French-language communications and the public service, as well as his role as mentor and leader within the GNWT.
  • The Kristine McLeod Award for Emerging Indigenous Leaders was awarded to Tyanna Steinwand, Director of Research Operations and Training in the Tłı̨chǫ Government. A true source of inspiration for her community, Ms. Steinwand ardently defended cultural preservation, environmental management and the revitalization of the Tłı̨chǫ language.
