The head of the Italian executive gathered more than 28% of the votes behind her list, surpassing her score in the 2022 legislative elections.

The far-right formation Fratelli d’Italia (FdI), led by Italian Council President Giorgia Meloni, won 28% of the vote in the European elections, confirming its status as the country’s most popular party since the 2022 general elections.
This victory strengthens Giorgia Meloni’s leadership both in Italy and in Europe, analyzes Matteo Villa, senior researcher at ISPI (Institute for International Policy Studies): “This result has two meanings. For Italy itself, this is a surprising show of support for the current government, almost two years after its election. For Europe, this confirms Meloni’s role as a possible bridge between the center right and the far right.“
The Democratic Party, the main opposition party, also emerged strengthened from this vote since it managed to reduce the gap with FdI to four points.
The European election is therefore creating a polarized political landscape in Italy, to the extent that no other party, neither Matteo Salvini’s League nor the populists of the Five Star Movement, has managed to make progress since the last election.
