A beacon to find them, a beacon to bring them all…
The Apple AirTag comes in the form of a small, well-finished tablet with a stainless steel surface and the apple brand logo on one side and a white, smooth surface on the other. It is possible to personalize your AirTag by having your name or an emoji engraved on the back and hanging it on a key ring or another accessory offered by Apple or a third-party manufacturer such as Belkin. It is impossible to hang it any other way. Finally, the AirTag is waterproof up to a certain depth with its IP67 certification.
The Apple AirTag works thanks to a U1 chip which allows it to connect via Bluetooth Low Energy and Ultra Wide Band (UBW) to an iPhone or iPad. It also supports NFC recognition and integrates an accelerometer to fine-tune its position and a speaker to ring at the user’s request, in order to find it more easily. A CR2032 battery is included with the purchase, this ensures at least one year of autonomy, enough to give you peace of mind for a moment before changing it.
Doubled efficiency thanks to the Apple ecosystem
The Apple AirTag works with all iPhones and iPads with at least iOS 14.5 or iPadOS 14.5, you must also have your Apple ID credentials, activate double authentication and use iCloud. The AirTag is an extremely simple tag to use, just hold it close to an Apple device to associate it with the Find My app. It then becomes possible to locate the AirTag up to a range of 100 meters with Precision Finding and its augmented reality interface. An AirTag can also be used with an Android device using the Find My application, but the experience is then less interesting.
If the AirTag is not within Bluetooth range, it is possible to use the power of the Apple ecosystem which mobilizes the anonymized network of all surrounding iPhones. This relay network makes it possible to locate the AirTag when one of these iPhones passes nearby. Thanks to Lost mode, you can write a message with your phone number to a well-intentioned person who found the lost AirTag first, and which they can read by connecting their smartphone to the tag with the NFC connection .
