While Marine Le Pen, all smiles after the President’s announcement on Sunday evening, knows that she is at the gates of power, the left must become aware of its historic role as a bulwark against fascism.
The dissolution of the National Assembly is the supreme weapon available to the President to end a political crisis; by revealing this possibility on Sunday evening, Emmanuel Macron will have defined as such the overwhelming victory of the far right in the European elections. No more recourse to flat excuses about the unpopularity of Brussels; forgotten, the differentiation between national elections and European elections; swept away, the hope that the Olympic Games will make us forget the failure of the presidential majority. By calling legislative elections on June 30 and July 7, when hundreds of thousands of state servants had planned to take their vacation to be ready and tanned for the Paris Olympics, the head of state will at least have succeeded its surprise effect. Faster, higher, stronger ? Nothing is less sure. We remember, Jean-Marie Le Pen was green with rage after Jacques Chirac’s surprise announcement, describing the dissolution announced in May 1997 as“election scam”then “Rebellion”.
