This evening, the far right has almost 40% of the votes. These European elections make clear the seriousness of the situation. The far right has always been, and remains more than ever, the mortal enemy of workers, foreigners, racialized people, LGBTQI+, and democracy. The breakthrough of the far right is the consequence of the policy pursued by the government over the last two five-year terms, which has notably disregarded the struggles led by workers, for example during the pension reform. Successive governments and certain parties have constantly legitimized racist theories through words or actions. The anti-social policies of successive governments lead directly to the progression of the far right in the elections.
This evening’s announcement of the dissolution of the National Assembly by the President of the Republic makes the danger of the extreme right coming to power imminent. In doing so, he plays the sorcerer’s apprentice and makes himself the stepping stone of the extreme right.
