Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu dismissed his Defense Minister Yoav Gallant in a surprise announcement Tuesday evening, citing a “crisis of confidence”.
Foreign Minister Israel Katz will replace Yoav Gallant, Benjamin Netanyahu said, explaining that his confidence in Yoav Gallant had recently been “eroded”.
The two men have repeatedly clashed during the war against Hamas in Gaza and the escalating conflict with Lebanese Hezbollah and the Iranian regime.
In response to his dismissal, Yoav Gallant posted a message on social media on Tuesday, saying that “the security of the State of Israel has always been, and will always remain, my life’s mission.”
A previous attempt to dismiss Yoav Gallant, in March 2023, had triggered large demonstrations in the streets against Benjamin Netanyahu, already under fire from part of Israeli society due to his alleged mismanagement of the consequences of the Hamas’ attack on October 7 and its unsuccessful attempts to negotiate the safe return of hostages held in Gaza.
Yoav Gallant, a former marine commando and officer in the Israeli Defense Forces, strongly criticized the judicial reforms proposed by Benjamin Netanyahu and opposed National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir on this subject.
