Three months after the accidental death of cyclist Muriel Furrer (18) during the Zurich Worlds, Swiss sport was once again hit hard by the sudden death on December 23 of snowboarder Sophie Hediger, swept away by an avalanche while she was skiing in Arosa. The announcement was made the next day, Christmas Eve, by Swiss-Ski, for whom “a dark shadow” came to stifle the festive atmosphere which usually prevails during this period. Nine days earlier, Sophie Hediger had celebrated her 26th birthday.

Many Swiss sports figures have paid tribute to the deceased, who was a member of the national snowboardcross team. “It is with sadness and amazement that we take leave of the snowboardcross champion and sports soldier Sophie Hediger,” soberly greeted the President of the Confederation Viola Amherd, alluding to the fact that, like many elite athletes in Switzerland , the Zurich resident was under contract with the Army and had completed her recruit school (in 2020). “We will always remember you, Sophie,” promises half-pipe specialist Jan Scherrer, who crossed paths with Sophie Hediger at the 2022 Beijing Olympic Games. The memory of skier Aline Danioth, who wishes her: “Go in peace” , is older, it dates back to the 2016 Winter Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in Lillehammer, where the two teenagers each won several medals.
