This Monday, some wine growers from Vaucluse decided to demonstrate their anger in front of a Lidl store located in Orange. The cause of this dissatisfaction is clear: the prices charged by the hard discounter on wine are too low.
As indicated by our colleagues from Toulouse newspaperbottles of Côtes-du-Rhône are sold at a price of 1.99 euros per bottle, which is impossible to compete with on the winegrowers' side for this wine with a protected designation of origin (AOP).
A symbolic burst of anger
To mark the occasion, and to show their dismay in the face of prices which endanger and devalue their wine production, the wine growers bought bottles of Côtes-du-Rhône which they then broke in the supermarket parking lot. Other mobilizations, as well as blockades, are already planned from November 15 in several regions.
With these demonstrations, winegrowers hope for two things. First, that the general public and consumers be alerted to the risks of such low prices for their activity. Secondly and above all, they hope to be able to put pressure on mass distribution brands in a context of annual negotiations on wine prices.
