In a blog post for Halloween, Microsoft reminds that there is nothing scarier than not being ready to migrate to Windows 11 before the end of support for Windows 10, scheduled for October 14, 2025. The company highlighted the benefits of Windows 11, detailed the best upgrade methods, and suggested purchasing new hardware for those whose current devices aren't eligible for migration.
However, Microsoft also announced in the same post that it is for the first time offering a one-year Extended Security Updates (ESU) option for $30 for users who are unwilling or unable to upgrade. here next year.
An ESU option for personal use for Windows 10
Until now, an ESU update already existed for commercial companies and for education: for commercial customers it costs $61 per year per device, an amount doubling each year. For the education sector, rates are progressive, starting at $1 per license in the first year, then $2 in the second year and $4 in the third.
The ESU option for personal use is new, said Yusuf Mehdi, director of consumer marketing at Microsoft.
“We understand that some of you may need more time to upgrade to a new Windows 11 or Copilot+ PC”a écrit Yusuf Mehdi. “Enrolled PCs will continue to receive critical and important security updates for Windows 10; however, new features, bug fixes, and technical support will no longer be available from Microsoft.”
Microsoft also specified that security updates for Microsoft Defender Antivirus would be maintained until at least October 2028.
