Like every year at the same time, literature is in the spotlight with the awarding of the Goncourt and Renaudot prizes. Anne Marie Reval looks back at the works that won these prestigious awards this year.
The writer Kamel Daoud was awarded the Goncourt prize thanks to his work “Houris”. For his 5th novel, Kamel Daoud slips into the shoes of a 26-year-old woman named Aube, living in Oran in Algeria. Throughout the novel, Aube addresses the child she carries within her, whom she affectionately names “Houris”. This dialogue takes place through thought since Aube became mute during the civil war. “It's a book that can give meaning to what we experience in this country.” declared the winner of the 2024 Goncourt Prize.
Published by Editions Grasset, it is Gaël Faye's book entitled “Jacaranda” which received the Renaudot prize. In this work, the author looks back on the entire history of Rwanda over four generations. Jacaranda is the name of a tree at the top of which a 12-year-old girl named Stella observes her ancestors and their sorrows.
