A tragedy in the middle of a match. This Sunday, November 3 in Peru, defender Hugo de la Cruz Meza was struck by lightning during a match between the Juventud Bellavista team and the Familia Chocca team, reports the local press. The latter was pronounced dead a few moments later.

According to the report in the newspaper “La Repùblica”, the incident broke out around 4 p.m. local time in the Coto Coto stadium, in the town of Chicha during this derby between the two teams.

A guard in critical condition

Several videos published on social networks testify to the event which occurred only a few seconds after the referee ordered the match to be stopped due to the storm which was taking place.

While several injured people were rushed to the Carrión de Huancayo hospital, the death of Jose de la Cruz Meza, 34, was only noted a few hours after being hit. Goalkeeper Juan Chocca Llacta was in critical condition due to burns suffered, our colleagues specify. The condition of the other victims is not known at this stage.
