The office of International Development Minister Ahmed Hussen said the government hopes Canadians will be generous during events organized as part of Lebanese Heritage Month.
United Nations agencies estimate that Israel’s ground invasion and bombardment of Lebanon has displaced 1.4 million people since the end of September.
Canada has agreed to match donations made by the public to the Canadian Red Cross and the Humanitarian Coalition of Charities up to $3 million for each of the two organizations.
This initiative was to end on Sunday, but Mr. Hussen pushed back the deadline to November 17.
Aid workers on the ground say they are fighting hard to help the Lebanese meet their basic needs.
The streets of Beirut are cluttered with makeshift camps of families who have nowhere to shelter.
